Romans #15: Boasting? “It Is Excluded” Romans 3:27-31 Remember where we are in the book. I. SIN: God’s righteousness is revealed through Condemnation (1:18-3:20). a. The Gentiles Guilty (1:18-32) b. The Jews Guilty (2:1-3:8) c. The Whole World guilty (3:1-20) II. GRACE: God’s righteousness is revealed through Justification (3:21–5:21). a. Justification Stated (3:21-3:31) b. Justification illustrated in Abraham (4:1-25) c. Justification explained in Adam (5:1-21) Thought Flow 1. LAST WEEK: 2. THIS WEEK: Faith brings righteousness (3:21–26). Faith excludes boasting (3:27-31). Three Questions: 1. What becomes of boasting (3:27-28)? What is the “law of works” vs. the “law of faith”? “Therefore…A man is justified by faith apart from the deeds of the law”: See Eph 2:8-9; Tit 3:5. 2. Is God the God of the Jews only (3:29-30)? “God of the Jews Only”: “Who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through faith”: Why is “will justify” in the future tense? 3. Does faith overthrow the Law (3:31)? “We establish the law”: Application: 1. Faith excludes boasting for the unbeliever. 2. Faith excludes boasting for the believer. 3. Faith is receiving God’s free gift of righteousness for salvation.
